Plastic bags in Pakistan are usually priced per kg, but you use them by the piece. This guide shows how to turn a per-kg rate into a piece count and a cost per bag, so you can compare quotes properly.
The formula
Weight of one bag (g) = width (cm) × length (cm) × 2 × thickness (micron) × density ÷ 10,000
- Width and length: the flat size of the bag. To convert inches to cm, multiply by 2.54.
- × 2: a bag has two layers, front and back.
- Thickness: in micron. If your supplier quotes gauge, divide by 4 to get micron (100 gauge is 25 micron).
- Density: about 0.92 for LDPE, 0.95 for HDPE and 0.90 for PP.
Then: bags per kg = 1,000 ÷ weight of one bag, and cost per bag = price per kg ÷ bags per kg.
Worked example
A 12 x 16 inch LDPE bag at 40 micron:
- Size in cm: 30.48 x 40.64
- Weight: 30.48 × 40.64 × 2 × 40 × 0.92 ÷ 10,000 = about 9.1 g
- Bags per kg: 1,000 ÷ 9.1 = about 110
- Cost per bag at Rs 800 per kg: 800 ÷ 110 = about Rs 7.30
Things that change the count
- Gussets: for a bag with side gussets, add the full gusset depth to the width.
- Zips, handles and flaps: these add weight, so you get slightly fewer bags than the formula shows.
- Printing: ink adds very little weight, but printed bags are often priced differently.
